Telling the time — die Uhrzeit

Level A1 · halb drei = 2:30 · Viertel nach / vor · um + time · 24-hour clock

How do Germans tell the time?

There are two ways: the official 24-hour clock (vierzehn Uhr dreißig — timetables, appointments) and the everyday way with nach, vor, Viertel and halb.

When you need it

  • Making appointments: Um wie viel Uhr?
  • Catching trains and buses.
  • Everyday conversation: Es ist Viertel nach drei.

Pattern

minutes + nach / vor + hour

What changes

nach = past, vor = to — and halb looks ahead to the next hour

Examples

  • zehn **nach** drei — 3:10
  • zehn **vor** vier — 3:50

Uses: Numbers — Zahlen.

Most important memory

halb drei = 2:30 — halfway TO three

Don’t translate “halb drei” as “half past three”.

Asking the time

  • Wie spät ist es? — What time is it?
  • Wie viel Uhr ist es? — What time is it?

Full hours

  • 1:00: Es ist ein Uhr.
  • 2:00: Es ist zwei Uhr.
  • 3:00: Es ist drei Uhr.
1:00 has one small special rule
  • Es ist ein Uhr. — With Uhr, use ein — not eins.
  • Es ist eins. — Without Uhr, a casual “Es ist eins” is normal.

Think around the clock — starting from 3:00

Starting from 3:00

3:00 → 3:15 → 3:30 → 3:45

drei Uhr → Viertel nach drei → halb vier → Viertel vor vier

The tricky part — halb

German looks toward the NEXT hour

2:00 → halb drei → 3:00

zwei Uhr → 2:30 → drei Uhr

halb drei = halfway between 2 and 3 = 2:30

Quarter past / quarter to

  • 3:15: Viertel nach drei — quarter past three
  • 3:45: Viertel vor vier — quarter to four

Minutes past / to

  • 3:10: zehn nach drei — ten past three
  • 3:40: zwanzig vor vier — twenty to four
Fast clock memory
  • nach = past — zehn nach drei = 3:10
  • vor = to / before — zehn vor vier = 3:50

24-hour clock

Common in timetables, transport, announcements and official situations

14:30 Uhr + → + **vierzehn Uhr dreißig**

You may see 14:30 written and hear “vierzehn Uhr dreißig”.

At a specific time → um

  • 3:00: um drei Uhr — at three o’clock
  • 6:30: um halb sieben — at half past six

Time of day

  • morgens — in the mornings
  • vormittags — late morning / before noon
  • mittags — at midday
  • nachmittags — in the afternoons
  • abends — in the evenings
  • nachts — at night
Regional German: you may hear a different quarter system

In parts of eastern and southern German-speaking regions, viertel drei can mean 2:15 and dreiviertel drei can mean 2:45. As a beginner, use Viertel nach zwei and Viertel vor drei — they are understood everywhere.

Final full picture

Summary

  • ask — What time is it? (Wie spät ist es?)

  • half — looks to the next hour (halb drei = 2:30)
  • to — vor (zwanzig vor vier)
  • quarter past — Viertel nach (Viertel nach drei)
  • quarter to — Viertel vor (Viertel vor vier)
  • at — um + time (um halb sieben)

One clock pattern to remember

At :30 and :45, your mind is already looking toward the next hour.
