German grammar › B1

Passive alternatives — man, lässt sich, ist zu

Level B1 · man spricht · lässt sich machen · ist zu bezahlen · trinkbar

What is a passive alternative?

The passive says what happens, not who does it. German has shorter ways to say the same: man, lässt sich, ist zu and adjectives with -bar.

When you use them

  • man in everyday speech: Hier spricht man Deutsch.
  • lässt sich = can be done: Das lässt sich machen.
  • ist zu and -bar in rules and texts: Die Rechnung ist zu bezahlen.

Pattern

man + verb · lässt sich + infinitive · ist zu + infinitive · stem + -bar

Examples

  • Wie schreibt **man** das? — How do you spell that?
  • Das Wasser ist **trinkbar**. — The water is drinkable.

Remember: -bar and lässt sich mean can be done.

Builds on: Passive voice — Passiv.

  • = Das Fenster kann nicht geöffnet werden.: Das Fenster lässt sich nicht öffnen. — The window won’t open.

  • machbar — can be done
  • lesbar — readable
