Genitive prepositions

Level B1 · wegen, während, trotz, statt + genitive · außerhalb, innerhalb · written vs spoken

What are genitive prepositions?

A few prepositions — wegen, während, trotz, statt — take the genitive: wegen des Wetters (because of the weather). They are common in writing, news and formal speech.

When you use them

  • Giving reasons formally: wegen des Regens.
  • Saying during: während der Woche.
  • Contrast: trotz des Problems.

Pattern

preposition + des / der + noun

What changes

masculine / neuter: des + noun-(e)s · feminine / plural: der

Examples

  • wegen **des** Wetter**s** — because of the weather
  • während **der** Pause — during the break

Remember: After des, the noun usually adds -(e)s too: des Mannes, des Wetters.

Builds on: The four cases — the genitive = “whose”.

Main idea

wegen · während · trotz · statt → normally genitive

In careful standard German: wegen des Wetters, während des Sommers, trotz des Regens.

More formal location prepositions

Especially common in written / formal German

  • diesseits — on this / near side of · diesseits des Flusses

Real life — written vs spoken German

Standard / formal
  • wegen des Wetters

Recommended for formal writing and careful standard German.

Colloquial speech
  • wegen dem Wetter

The dative is common in informal speech in parts of the German-speaking world.

Don’t learn “the genitive is disappearing” as “I don’t need it.”

Dative alternatives occur in everyday speech, especially with words like wegen. But standard written German still regularly uses the genitive. You need it for reading, exams, formal communication and understanding more advanced German.

Practical learning strategy
  • When writing — use the standard genitive: wegen des Wetters
  • When listening — recognise both: wegen des Wetters / wegen dem Wetter
