Level A1 · Guess der, die or das from the ending
Can I guess der, die or das?
Often, yes. A noun’s meaning (days, seasons, young people …) or its ending (-ung, -chen, -ismus …) is a strong clue to its gender.
Why it helps
- One ending rule covers hundreds of nouns.
- You can make a smart guess when you meet a new word.
- Fewer articles to memorise one by one.
Pattern
ending or meaning → likely gender
Examples
- die Zeit**ung** — newspaper — -ung → die
- das Mäd**chen** — girl — -chen → das
- der Montag — Monday — all days → der
Remember: Learn the strongest clues first: -ung, -heit, -keit → die · -chen → das.
Watch out: Meaning can beat a look-alike ending: der Junge ends in -e (often die), but it’s a boy — so der.
Builds on: Nouns — the basics.
The ending often tells you der, die or das
die Zeit{ung} — newspaper — -ung → die
People: the person decides
- der Vater (a man → der) · die Mutter (a woman → die) · das Kind (a child → das)
- Except -chen / -lein: they always win. das Mädchen is a girl.
- Not a person? Look at the ending.
almost always

Safe or just a guess?
- der -ling -ismus -ig -ist -ent -or · die -ung -heit -keit -schaft -tion -tät -ei -ie · das -chen -lein
- -e → die (but der Junge) · -er → der (but die Mutter) · -o → das (but der Euro) · Ge- → das (but die Geschichte) · -ment → das (but der Moment) · -um → das (but der Baum) · Morgen, Abend → der (but die Nacht) · Regen, Schnee → der (but das Wetter)
- A person beats a guess: der Junge is a boy. Only -chen / -lein beat a person.
Watch out
- Plural is always die: die Kinder. It does not mean “feminine”.
- Two nouns: the last one decides. das Haus + die Tür = die Haustür
- No clue? Learn the word with its article.
