False friends — Falsche Freunde

Level A2 · bekommen · Gift · Chef · also · bald · Meer — look familiar, mean something else

What is a false friend?

A false friend is a German word that looks like an English word but means something else: das Gift looks like “gift” but means poison. They feel easy — that’s why they cause mistakes.

Why it matters

  • Reading: one wrong word can change a whole sentence.
  • Speaking: you might say something strange by accident.
  • Most of them are short, everyday words.

Examples

  • Ich **bekomme** ein Geschenk. — I receive a present — not “I become a gift”.

High-value false friends

  1. bekommen · NOT become
to receive / get. English “become” → werden
  2. das Gift · NOT gift / present
poison. English “gift / present” → das Geschenk
  3. der Chef · NOT cook (chef)
boss / manager. English “cook (chef)” → der Koch / die Köchin
  4. also · NOT also
so / therefore / well then. English “also” → auch
  5. wer · NOT where
    who. English “where” → wo
  6. bald · NOT bald (hairless)
soon. English “bald (hairless)” → kahl
  7. die Fabrik · NOT fabric / material
factory. English “fabric / material” → der Stoff
  8. der Rat · NOT rat
advice / council depending on context. English “rat” → die Ratte
  9. das Handy · NOT handy / useful
mobile phone / cell phone. English “handy / useful” → praktisch / handlich (depending on meaning)
  10. sensibel · NOT sensible / reasonable
sensitive. English “sensible / reasonable” → vernünftig
  11. der Rock · NOT rock / stone
skirt (also rock music). English “rock / stone” → der Stein / der Fels
  12. das Meer · NOT more
    sea. English “more” → mehr
Memorize these as opposite pairs
  • bekommen ≠ become — bekommen = receive · werden = become
  • Gift ≠ gift — Gift = poison · Geschenk = present
  • Chef ≠ chef — Chef = boss · Koch = cook
  • also ≠ also — also = so / therefore · auch = also
Tiny spelling traps

wer = who · wo = where · Meer = sea · mehr = more

Short words are easy to confuse because your brain reads them too quickly.

Put them in real sentences

  • bekommen: Ich bekomme morgen das Paket. — I will receive the package tomorrow.
  • Gift: Das ist Gift. — That is poison.
  • Chef: Mein Chef ist heute nicht da. — My boss isn’t here today.
  • auch: Ich komme auch. — I’m coming too / also.
