Third and mixed conditionals
Level C1 · If I had known…
How do you talk about an unreal past?
The third conditional imagines a different past and its past result. Mixed conditionals connect an unreal past to a present result.
When you use it
- Regrets: If I had studied, I would have passed.
- Past causes, present effects.
Pattern
If + had done, would have done
Examples
- If she **had left** earlier, she **would have caught** the train. — third: past → past
- If I **had taken** the job, I **would be** rich now. — mixed: past → present
The rule
Third: If + had done, would have done — an unreal past. Mixed: If + had done, would + verb — a past cause with a present result.
Third → mixed: If I had left earlier, I would have caught the train. → If I had taken the job, I would be rich now.
Common mistakes
- Not:
If I would have known, I would have come.— But: If I had known, I would have come.
