English grammar › C1
Inversion for emphasis
Level C1 · Never have I seen…
What is inversion?
In formal or dramatic English, a negative or limiting word can start the sentence. Then the rest uses question word order.
Where you meet it
- Formal writing and speeches.
- Emphasis in storytelling.
Pattern
Never / Rarely / Not only + auxiliary + subject + verb
Examples
- **Never have I** seen such a view. — normal: I have never seen …
- **Not only did** he lie, he also stole. — did is added like in a question
The rule
After a negative or limiting word at the start (never, rarely, not only, no sooner), use question word order.
Neutral → emphatic: I have never seen such a view. → Never have I seen such a view.
Tip
This is formal and written style. In conversation, the neutral order is normal.
