Questions with do
Level A1 · Where do you live?
Why do English questions need do?
In the present simple, English cannot just turn the verb around. It adds a helper — do or does — in front of the person.
When you need it
- Asking for information: Where do you live?
- Yes / no questions: Do you like coffee?
Pattern
(question word) + do / does + person + base verb
Examples
- Where **do** you work? — do with I / you / we / they
- What time **does** she start? — does with he / she / it
Watch out: When does takes the -s, the main verb loses it: not “does she starts”.
Builds on the present simple.
The rule
Question word + do / does + person + verb. The verb stays in its base form.
Statement → question: You live in Paris. → Where do you live?
Tip
Common question words: what, where, when, who, why, how.
Common mistakes
- Not:
Where you live?— But: Where do you live? - Not:
What does she likes?— But: What does she like?
