Word order — subordinate clauses

Level A2 · weil, dass, wenn … verb at the end · ADUSO · weil vs denn

What is a subordinate clause?

A subordinate clause adds information to a main sentence — a reason, a condition, a fact: because I am tired, if I have time, that he is coming. It can’t normally stand alone. German marks it with word order: the finite verb moves to the end.

When you use it

  • Reasons: …, weil ich müde bin.
  • Conditions: Wenn ich Zeit habe, …
  • Saying what you know or think: Ich weiß, dass er kommt.

Pattern

conjunction + subject + … + finite verb

What changes

the place of the finite verb: from position 2 to the end

Examples

  • Ich **bin** müde. — Main clause — verb in position 2.
  • …, weil ich müde **bin**. — Subordinate clause — verb at the end.

Remember: With normal subordinate clauses such as weil, dass and wenn, the finite verb normally goes to the end.

Builds on: Word order — the verb in position 2.

Iron rule

subordinating conjunction + verb at the END

dass · weil · obwohl · wenn · als · bevor · nachdem · damit · ob …

Basic structure

conjunction + subject + information + VERB

**dass** + er + heute + **kommt**

Ich weiß, dass er heute kommt.

See the verb move

  • dass: Ich weiß, dass er heute kommt. — I know that he is coming today.
  • weil: Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin. — I’m staying at home because I’m sick.

Main subordinating conjunctions

  • dass — that
  • weil — because
  • obwohl — although
  • wenn — if / when
  • als — when · one past event / period
  • bevor — before
  • nachdem — after
  • damit — so that
  • ob — whether
  • während — while
  • seit / seitdem — since
  • bis — until
  • sobald — as soon as
  • falls — in case / if

If the subordinate clause comes first

Verb → comma → verb

Weil ich krank | bin, | bleibe | ich zu Hause.

Weil ich krank = subordinate clause · bin, = verb at the end · bleibe = main verb (V2) · ich zu Hause. = rest

Weil ich krank bin, bleibe ich zu Hause.

Why does “bleibe” come straight after the comma?
  • Weil ich krank bin — The whole subordinate clause takes position 1 of the main sentence.
  • bleibe — The main clause still follows V2, so its finite verb comes next.
Powerful memory pattern

subordinate clause: VERB END · main clause: VERB V2

Weil ich krank BIN, BLEIBE ich zu Hause.

Coordinating conjunctions are different

ADUSO → normal main-clause word order

  • A — aber
  • D — denn
  • U — und
  • S — sondern
  • O — oder

Compare weil and denn

weil → subordinate
  • Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.

The finite verb goes to the end.

denn → coordinating
  • Ich bleibe zu Hause, denn ich bin krank.

Normal main-clause V2 word order stays.

Two families — keep them separate
  • weil / dass / wenn … — subordinate → verb at the end
  • und / aber / oder / denn / sondern — coordinating → normal V2

Final full picture

Summary

  • main clause — finite verb in position 2 (Ich bin krank.)
  • subordinate clause — finite verb at the end (weil ich krank bin)
  • subordinate first — whole clause = position 1 (…, bleibe ich …)
  • weil — verb goes to the end (weil ich krank bin)
  • denn — normal V2 stays (denn ich bin krank)
  • ADUSO — aber · denn · und · sondern · oder (no verb-to-end rule)
One rule to remember

dass / weil / wenn … → VERB END · ADUSO → NORMAL V2

And if the subordinate clause comes first: verb at the end, comma, main verb.
