Prefix verbs — separable or not?

Level B1 · anrufen vs verstehen · the 8 that stay · angerufen vs verstanden · über-, um-

What is a prefix verb?

A small part at the front makes a new verb: anrufen, verstehen. Some prefixes split off and go to the end; eight never do.

Why it matters

  • It decides the word order: Ich rufe dich an.
  • It decides the Perfekt: angerufen but verstanden.
  • You can hear it: a separable prefix is stressed.

Pattern

be-, emp-, ent-, er-, ge-, miss-, ver-, zer- → stay

Examples

  • Ich **rufe** dich morgen **an**. — I’ll call you tomorrow.
  • Ich **verstehe** dich. — I understand you.

Remember: Stressed prefix → separates. Unstressed → stays, and no ge-.

Builds on: Separable verbs and Perfekt.

What is a prefix verb?

Idea

A small part at the front of a verb makes a new verb with a new meaning.

  • kommen — come: ankommen · bekommen — arrive · get, receive
  • stehen — stand: aufstehen · verstehen — get up · understand

Some of these parts split off in a sentence. Others never do.

Two kinds

Idea

Separable prefixes move to the end. Inseparable ones stay on the verb.

  • Separable — anrufen: Ich rufe dich morgen an. — I’ll call you tomorrow.
  • Inseparable — verstehen: Ich verstehe dich gut. — I understand you well.
Hear the difference
  • Separable: the prefix is loud — ANrufen, AUFstehen, EINkaufen
  • Inseparable: the verb is loud — verSTEhen, beKOMmen, erZÄHlen

The inseparable group is short — learn it by heart.

The 8 that never separate

Idea

be-, emp-, ent-, er-, ge-, miss-, ver-, zer- always stay on the verb.

  • be-: bekommen — get
  • emp-: empfehlen — recommend
  • ent-: entscheiden — decide
  • er-: erzählen — tell
  • ge-: gefallen — please
  • miss-: missverstehen — misunderstand
  • ver-: vergessen — forget
  • zer-: zerbrechen — break into pieces
All the others separate
  • an-, auf-, aus-, ein-, mit-, vor-, zu-, zurück- … — Ich kaufe heute ein. · Kommst du mit?

The difference shows again in the Perfekt.

The Perfekt: where does ge- go?

Idea

Separable → ge- in the middle. Inseparable → no ge- at all.

verbPerfekt
separableanrufenhat angerufen
separableeinkaufenhat eingekauft
inseparablebekommenhat bekommen
inseparableverstehenhat verstanden
Not gebekommen

be-, ver-, er- … already sit at the front. There is no room for ge-.

A few prefixes can be both kinds.

über-, um-, unter-, durch-, wieder-

Idea

These can be both. Usually: a real movement → separable. A new, abstract meaning → inseparable.

  • umziehen — move house (separable): Wir ziehen nächste Woche um. — We’re moving next week.
  • übersetzen — translate (inseparable): Er übersetzt den Text. — He translates the text.
  • wiederholen — repeat (inseparable): Wiederholen Sie das bitte. — Please repeat that.
  • unterschreiben — sign (inseparable): Bitte unterschreiben Sie hier. — Please sign here.
Not sure?
  • Look it up once — A good dictionary marks separable verbs: um|ziehen.

Last step: two verbs in one sentence.

Put it together

Idea

Is the prefix one of the 8? Then it stays. Otherwise it goes to the end.

One sentence

Ich bekomme heute ein Paket und rufe dich dann an. — I’m getting a parcel today and I’ll call you then.

  • bekomme: be- is inseparable → stays on the verb
  • rufe … an: an- is separable → goes to the end
