Perfekt — extra sentence practice

Level A2 · Build Perfekt sentences: helper in position 2, participle at the end

What is this lesson for?

Quick sentence-building practice for the Perfekt, the everyday spoken past: you put the helper verb and the past participle in the right places.

Pattern

haben / sein + … + Partizip II

Examples

  • Ich habe das Buch gelesen. — I read the book. / I have read the book.

Remember: However long the middle gets, the participle stays last.

Full explanation: Perfekt — spoken past.

The rule

Helper verb (haben/sein) stays in position 2. The past participle always moves to the very end — no matter what you pack in between.

Present → Perfekt: Ich lese das Buch. → Ich habe das Buch gelesen.

Tip

Most participles are regular: ge- + stem + -t. machen → gemacht, kaufen → gekauft. Only the irregular ones below need memorizing.

Important

sein is mainly for movement or a change of state (gehen, fahren, werden, sterben…) — plus sein and bleiben. Most other verbs — even irregular ones — take haben.

Common mistakes

  • Not: Ich bin das Buch gelesen. — But: Ich habe das Buch gelesen. (Reading isn't movement — it takes haben, not sein.)
  • Not: Ich habe gegeht. — But: Ich bin gegangen. (gehen is irregular and takes sein, since it's movement.)
  • Not: Ich habe das Buch heute gelesen habe. — But: Ich habe das Buch heute gelesen. (Only one verb form appears — haben shows up once, at position 2.)
