Konjunktiv II — would / could

What is Konjunktiv II?

Konjunktiv II is the verb form for things that are not real — imagined, wished, hypothetical — and for polite requests. English uses “would”, “could” or “if I were …”.

When you use it

Imagining: Ich würde gern in Spanien leben.
Being polite: Könnten Sie mir helfen?
Unreal conditions: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, …

Pattern

würde + … + infinitive

What changes

würde changes with the person; sein, haben and modals use their own forms: wäre, hätte, könnte

Examples

Ich würde gern kommen. — I would like to come.
Wenn ich reich **wäre**, … — If I were rich, …

Remember: Real → Ich habe Zeit. Not real → Ich hätte Zeit.

Watch out: In the wenn-part, prefer the short forms: Wenn ich Zeit hätte … sounds much better than “Wenn ich Zeit haben würde …”.
