German grammar › A2

Comparing — comparative & superlative

Level A2 · schneller, am schnellsten, größer als, so groß wie

How do you compare things?

Like English, German adds an ending to the adjective: schnell → schneller → am schnellsten (fast → faster → fastest). German does this even with long adjectives: interessanter, never “more interesting”.

When you use it

  • Two different things: Berlin ist größer als Hamburg.
  • Two equal things: Tom ist so alt wie ich.
  • The most: Dieses Café ist am schönsten.

Pattern

adjective-er als · am adjective-sten

What changes

the ending — and many short adjectives add an umlaut: alt → älter

Examples

  • Mein Bruder ist größer **als** ich. — My brother is taller than me.

Remember: The ending does the work: -er = more, -(e)sten = most.

Watch out: After a comparative, use als, not wie: größer als ich.

The comparison ladder

schnell → schneller → am schnellsten

fast → faster → fastest

Positive → Comparative → Superlative

1 — Comparative

Usually add -er

schnell + + + **er** + → + schnell**er**

Comparative = adjective + -er

  • schnell: schneller — faster
  • klein: kleiner — smaller

2 — Superlative

Before a noun
  • der schnellste Mann

Use the superlative stem + the normal adjective ending.

After the verb
  • Er läuft am schnellsten.

Use am …-sten to say how someone or something is or does something.

The two superlative shapes

schnell + → + **schnellst-** + → + der schnellste

or: schnell → am schnellsten

Some common short adjectives change a / o / u → ä / ö / ü
  • älter → ältest- — alt
  • größer → größt- — groß
  • jünger → jüngst- — jung
The umlaut isn’t automatic for every a / o / u adjective.

Many common short adjectives take an umlaut in comparison, but not all do. Learn frequent forms such as alt → älter and groß → größer as vocabulary.

Important irregular comparisons

  • gut: besser · best-
  • hoch: höher · höchst-
  • nah: näher · nächst-
  • viel: mehr · meist-
  • gern: lieber · am liebsten

The comparison words you must not mix

Different = als · Equal = wie

  • als — comparative + than: Er ist größer als ich.
  • so … wie — as … as: Er ist so alt wie ich.
Fast memory trick
  • größer als — Different
  • so groß wie — Equal
  • am größten — Highest level
Common mistake

Don’t say größer wie in standard German. For “bigger than”, use größer als. Use wie when two things are equal: so groß wie.

  • equal — so … wie (so alt wie ich)
