Accusative prepositions — DOGFU

Level A2 · durch, ohne, gegen, für, um + accusative · bis · entlang

What is a preposition?

A preposition is a small word that connects a noun to the rest of the sentence: for my friend, through the park, without sugar. In German, each preposition also decides the case of the noun after it.

When you use them

  • For someone or something: für meinen Freund.
  • Movement through or around: durch den Park, um die Ecke.
  • Without / against: ohne Zucker, gegen die Wand.

Pattern

DOGFU preposition → accusative

What changes

only masculine articles change: der → den, ein → einen

Examples

  • für **den** Vater — for the father
  • durch **die** Stadt — through the city — feminine, no change

Remember: für needs the accusative → der Vater becomes den Vater.

Your memory code

  • D — durch
  • O — ohne
  • G — gegen
  • F — für
  • U — um

What changes?

The clearest change is masculine

der Park + → + durch **den** Park

Accusative masculine: der → den · ein → einen

The DOGFU family

  • durch — through
  • ohne — without
  • gegen — against
  • für — for
  • um — around / at

See each one in a phrase

  • durch: durch den Park — through the park
  • für: für meinen Freund — for my friend
  • gegen: gegen die Wand — against the wall
  • ohne: ohne den Schlüssel — without the key
DOGFU doesn’t create new article endings — it simply triggers the accusative
  • der → den — für den Mann
  • ein → einen — ohne einen Schlüssel
  • die / das stay — gegen die Wand · für das Kind

um has two very useful jobs

Around something · exact clock time

  • um den Tisch — around the table
  • um 8 Uhr — at 8 o’clock

Two useful extras

bis
  • bis nächsten Montag

Means “until / up to”. It often appears without an article.

entlang
  • den Fluss entlang

Means “along”. With the accusative it usually comes after the noun.

Keep the memory system clean
  • DOGFU — memorise these five as the core unit
  • bis — useful accusative-related preposition, but behaves differently with articles
  • entlang — usually follows the noun: den Fluss entlang

Common contractions

Preposition + das can become one word

  • für das: fürs
  • durch das: durchs
  • um das: ums
