What is the second conditional?
The second conditional imagines something unreal or unlikely now or in the future, and its result. The past form does not mean past time here.
When you use it
- Dreams: If I won the lottery, I’d travel.
- Advice: If I were you, I’d ask.
Pattern
If + past simple, would + verb
Examples
- If I **had** more time, I**’d learn** Spanish. — I don’t have the time
Compare: first conditional = real possibility.
The rule
For unreal or unlikely situations now: If + past simple, would + verb.
Real → unreal: If I have time, I'll help. → If I had time, I'd help.
Tip
With be, formal English uses were for every person: If I were you…
Common mistakes
- Not:
If I would have money, I'd travel.— But: If I had money, I'd travel.
