English grammar › B1
First conditional
Level B1 · If it rains, I'll stay home
What is the first conditional?
The first conditional talks about a real possibility in the future and its result: if this happens, that will happen.
When you use it
- Plans that depend on something: If it rains, we’ll stay in.
- Warnings and promises.
Pattern
If + present simple, will + verb
Examples
- If you **study**, you**’ll pass**. — present after if, will in the result
Watch out: No will after if: not “if it will rain”.
The rule
For a real possibility: If + present simple, will + verb. The if-part never takes will.
Condition → result: If you hurry, → you'll catch the bus.
Common mistakes
- Not:
If it will rain, I'll stay home.— But: If it rains, I'll stay home.
